Today I would like to talk about the structure of the little-known outside Japan heritage of Takuma Hisa called Daito-ryu Aiki-budo Densho Zen Juikkan (大東流合気武道伝書全十一巻), better known as Soden (総伝).
Soden consists of 11 volumes and includes:
– Volumes one through five are known as Aikido (合気道) and include the techniques of Morihei Ueshiba
– The sixth volume is titled Dai Nihon Sogo Budo Asahi Ryu Jujutsu (大日本綜合武道旭流柔術) and includes Ueshiba’s higher techniques.
– The seventh through ninth volumes of the book are titled Gokui Soden (大東流合気柔術極意総伝) and include Sokaku Takeda’s techniques.
– The tenth volume developed by Takuma Hisa is called Aikido Dai-jukkan Keisatsukan Yoto Waza Hitsuto (合気道第十巻警察官用捕技祕傳) or Hogihiden and includes arrest techniques for police officers.
– The eleventh volume developed by Takuma Hisa is called Aikido Daijuikkan Joshi Goshinjutsu (合氣道第十一巻女子護身術) or Yoshibudo and includes self-defense techniques for women.
Regarding the technical components. According to my knowledge:
– The first volume consists of 56 idori (居取り) techniques, more familiar to Aikido practitioners as suwari-waza (座り技), and includes the ideas of ikajo and nikajo.
– The second volume consists of 52 idori techniques and includes ideas from sankajo, yonkajo. There is also an extensive set of hanza-handachi (半座半立) techniques better known in Aikido as hanmi-handachi (半身半立).
– The third volume consists of 86 tachi-ai (立合い) techniques, more familiar to Aikido practitioners as tachi-waza (たちわざ), and incorporates the ideas of ikajo and nikajo.
– The fourth volume consists of 54 tachi-ai techniques and includes the ideas of sankajo and yonkajo. There is an extensive set of ushirodori (後ろ取) techniques.
– The fifth volume consists of 136 techniques of predominant tachi-ai and incorporates the idea of irimi.
– The sixth volume consists of 50 techniques and includes a variety of ideas.
– The seventh volume consists of 57 techniques and includes a variety of ideas.
– Volume eight consists of 65 techniques and includes a variety of ideas.
– The ninth volume consists of 51 techniques and includes a variety of ideas, including Aiki techniques.
At the end nine volumes of Soden contains 607 techniques as far as I saw it.
