Exploring Historical Photos – Gozo Shioda’s demonstration

The Hawai’i Hochi, June 23rd 1973 – Gozo Shioda demonstrates at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hawai’i Aikido Yoshinkai.

The Hawai’i Aikido Yoshinkai was established by Yukio Noguchi in 193. Noguchi originally visited Hawai’i as Gozo Shioda’s Otomo in 1961 (the same year that Morihei Ueshiba visited Hawai’i). He taught at the Young Buddhist’s Association on Nuuanu Avenue for many years.

The Hawai’i Aikido Yoshinkai was largely ignored by the larger Aikikai community in Hawai’i. When Gozo Shioda visited Hawai’i in 1961 the Hawai’i Aikikai actually placed advertisements in the local newspapers disavowing any connection between Gozo Shioda and the Aikikai.

Ironically, Gozo Shioda had been promoted to 9th Dan in Aikido directly by Morihei Ueshiba in Iwama only two months prior to his 1961 visit to Hawai’i.
